Christmas-Birthday-Driver's Ed Combo

It never lasts long enough. But we always pack in plenty during our Christmas celebration.

This year's Christmas Eve was extra special, since my mom was celebrating her 90th birthday, complete with balloon arch and all 33 of us.

We moved to the shed for our birthday meal several years ago. We outgrew the house.

After the buffet, Mom got the annual rendition of "Happy Birthday to You!" and people chose from two kinds of cake (chocolate and confetti) and three kinds of homemade ice cream (mocha, cookies and cream and strawberry).

Thanks to Tamara for setting up the camera timer so we could all be in the shot!

Then, we successfully accomplished our annual photo shoot.

Their kids ...

The grandkids ...
The great-grandkids ...

The group we affectionately call "the outlaws."

And a new one this year: The decorating committee, who did their usual wonderful job with place cards and table decor.

Before the "official" photos, we also managed to squeeze in a time for an updated family portrait. My tip for you: In the absence of a professional photographer, choose a teenage girl for your portrait. They are used to handling the phone camera. (Thanks to my great-niece Neelly for her assistance.)

I wish I'd gotten one with us and the granddaughters, but we missed that one.

Our own family Christmas was just as packed with activities. Besides opening presents and eating (a lot!), the girls met Grandpa's new cats - A Boy Named Sue and Carat.

Notice the kitty hiding under the blanket?

Brooke helped restock the bird feeders and added some of Grandpa's new feeders.

And, maybe most important of all, had driving lessons.

Kinley, who will soon take her driving test, got a little practice on rural roads with both Grandpa and Uncle Brent.

And Brooke had her time in the driver's seat with the Gator.

It was over too soon ... other than the leftovers. I'm thankful for those today!

Christmas Traditions Continue

Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024 - Janis Moore's birthday and the extended Moore family Christmas dinner

The group photos at the Moore family birthday/Christmas gathering have gotten progressively easier to accomplish. Even though the photo expanded by another person this year to 34, we all perform on command and look at the camera.

The same could not be said of the great-grand photo with Birthday Girl Janis Moore back in 2017:

It was marginally better in 2018, when the last of the current great-grands was added:

These days, it takes considerably less time to capture the moment:

Look at that: Everybody looking the same direction and smiling!

The rest of us are pretty good at it, too. I guess we get it by example.

With 34 people, we need a couple of birthday cakes to celebrate Janis Moore's Christmas Eve birthday. This year, it was her 89th! Besides the cakes, I also made three kinds of homemade ice cream, another birthday tradition for our family.

 The "kids"

The grandkids

And the "outlaws"

Here is Exhibit A as to why the meal has been moved to the "good" shed. This is my mom opening her birthday gifts in the family room, the largest room in my parents' house. And this isn't everybody. I couldn't get the whole crowd in one shot. We probably should move the noon meal to the shed, too, but that would interfere with the basketball court.

As with most families, our combination birthday/Christmas celebration has its share of traditions.

There are often some shots by my dad's 1952 restored pickup.

But we have some at our house, too, where the grandfather clock - an heirloom from Randy's family - is often the backdrop for holiday shots.

Our own family Christmas began with a great cat escape. One of Randy's "tame" cats didn't particularly care for the influx of visitors. It scratched multiple people as it escaped to hide. For those of you who know me well, you can imagine how thrilled I was that the cat was MIA.

However, the cat was successfully recaptured after an unplanned interlude of "hide and seek."

There are plenty of other traditions. I am known for my snack mixes. But the Ladd family just gets better and better at the yearly sugar cookie decorating they do at home and share with the rest of us. I've told them that I need lessons.

It's also part of our family tradition to play games. Susan brought a new family bingo game this year. We have our annual Left, Right, Center tournament, also compliments of Brent and Susan. We had a surprise winner for a new music game called Hitster.

Every year, we add the girls' height to the same measuring stick that their mom and Uncle Brent used.

For the record, Kinley pretty much mirrors her mother's growth patterns.

At this point, Brooke is outpacing them both.

The only problem with holidays? They fly by too quickly, leaving behind only the colored lights and empty tree.

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas, too.

Today, we're hoping for a K-State Wildcat victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Rate Bowl! Go 'Cats!

Reboot: Christmas Photo Imperfection

Tradition dictates that we attempt to take my Mom's Christmas Eve birthday photo with all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Taking photos of nine children - ages 7 and younger - is not for amateurs, though we tried it anyway. We're just lucky everyone was looking relatively acceptable in a frame or two.

My sister, Lisa, got the best version (the photo at the top of this post).
In reality, it was more like this ....
... or this ...
 ... or this.

Next year, we'll add another face to the great-grandchild photo - a great-grandson who is to be born in February 2018. I'm guessing the photo results aren't going to get too much better for the foreseeable future.
The grandchildren shot is easier these days. It hasn't always been that way though. The grandchildren have been taking the annual photo for years,
From left: Abby, Brian, Blake, Mom holding Madison, Jill, Brent & Paige
They've improved since the first version with all seven of them back in 1994. They ought to be experts by now.

If I'm honest, photographing just two of them isn't a piece of cake either.

Maybe just one at a time is the way to go!

Or maybe I should stick to cat photography. Target didn't even move when he got crowned by Brooke.
But Christmas isn't about perfection (though this Type A first-born can't ever quite figure that out during all the preparation).
It's about genuine smiles ...

... family,. love ...

... and a whole lot of moving parts AND moving kids.

Our annual Christmas Eve birthday photo shoot isn't going to make it onto a photo website, showing the "how-to" to create the perfect holiday image. It's not about photography's Rule of 1/3s or perfect lighting. It's about family - all the imperfections and all the chaos.

There was definitely chaos. But, boy, did they have fun!
And so did the birthday girl.
