Put On A Happy Face

Gray skies are gonna clear up
Put on a happy face
Brush off the clouds and cheer up
Put on a happy face
From Tony Bennett's "Put On A Happy Face"

Perspective is a funny thing. There are lots of quotes about "waiting for the storm to pass" or "If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain."

I can pretty much guarantee you that none of these quotes were made famous by farmers.

Last weekend and into Monday, we got 1.10 inches of rain. While we didn't get as much as some areas of Kansas, the rain was welcomed as it fell on pastures, alfalfa and our fields of fall crops like sudan, silage, corn and milo.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, our farm on the Stafford/Reno County line is straddling the moderate to severe drought line. Overall, however, our conditions are improved after some timely rains.
Would we turn down another rain? Nope. After a winter when barely a drop of rain, ice or snow fell, we will give thanks for rain ... even if Randy happens to be on the golf course at the time.
This photo was taken Monday evening. Randy teed off, but that was the last hole he golfed. We raced our carts to our cars, along with two other couples who were chased by the wind pushing the leading edge of the storm and some lightning in the distance.

None of us were complaining. ... Well, one of the couples had left the top down on their convertible in town several miles away. They may have lamented about that.
But they weren't turning down the rain on their farm ground!

  1. Here in NE Oklahoma, I doubt anyone, farmer or not, would be disappointed if we got a good rain. We are very dry and I don't think there is rain in the forecast, for awhile. I sure hope we get a decent winter!

    Grace & Peace,

    1. Yes, our winter was bone dry last year, so we started the year way behind, probably like you did. Wouldn't it be nice if we could place an order for rain and have it arrive on cue? Here's hoping for a good rain for your location, too!

  2. So glad you got some rain! Hanging out wash, leaving the windows open (or the top down!) and going on a golf outing is a sure way to get some rain! Yeah, I know, if only it were that easy. But it was worked this time! ;)

  3. Wonderful news! Sadly lack of rain right across the globe is a continuing problem. We are not looking forward to the summer temperatures, fast approaching.

  4. Seems you and me both on drought watch. It is indeed a worry that heatwave conditions across Europe, wildfires and drought in USA, it is not a good sign for our Summer.

    1. A high school classmate of Jill's is a wildfire fire fighter. He is currently fighting fires in Utah. His dad also served in that capacity for years. They both say that it's worse than it's ever been. I keep praying for the firefighters, their families and the people who they are trying to help.
